I have Microsoft office excel at work, and openoffice at home, they usually open spreadsheets the same and do the same job at the same level, but I have recently opened a spreadsheet (that i have open in microsoft excel with no problem) in openoffice, and the spreadsheet had error messages. I was wondering if this is caused by different formats that openoffice ad microsoft use, if the file might be corrupt, or if there are some certain functions that can only be used on microsoft excel(not openoffice). I was also wondering a solution to this problem.

Some functions don't work the same - like macros and pivot tables, so they won't be recognised in excel.
You can transfer basic charts and tables but you're stuck when you need to do more advanced stuff.

You probably should have converted the Open Office file to Excel, and opened the Excel file with Excel at work. Then you would have to reverse the procedure and convert back to Open Office for home use.

This is one of the downfalls of using Open Office. It is great if you don't have to open it in another format on another computer, but if you do -- as you obviously do -- it might be to your advantage to invest in the Home/Student version of Microsoft Office.
I bought MS Office 2003 Home/Student online for $124 with free shipping. Our local Office Max and Office Depot were selling it for about the same. Check around. Be sure to get the CDs with product key.
